Dementia- causes
At some point in time each one of us will know someone in their life with dementia but what do we know about the causes?
Dementia is generally caused by disruptions or damages caused to our brain cells, particularly in the cerebral cortex (the part of the brain that controls memory, language, and perception). In some cases the damage or disruption isn't permanent and can be reversed with proper treatment.
Dehydration: water is key to keep our body functioning well. Our body is made up of 60-80% water. Water helps nourish and detoxify the body. When we don't give the body enough water it can worsen cognitive function, visual perception, and mood. Women of all ages are more sensitive to the effects of dehydration but particularly elderly women. To help avoid dehydration it is recommended for women to drink 8-11 cups of water per day and for men to drink 10-15 cups of water per day.
Thyroid Disease- when thyroid levels are either over or under producing, overall body function decreases. With the help of proper nutrition and supplements, the body can be fully restored to help eliminate dementia.
Vitamin B12 Deficiency- Vitamin B12 assists Red Blood Cell production, which transports oxygen to the brain. Impaired absorption of Vitamin B12 can lead to pernicious anemia. Symptoms of this include: fatigue, yellowed skin, shortness of breath, dementia like symptoms of confusion and difficulty concentrating. Talk to your physician about having your Vitamin B12 monitored. If you are on the low end of normal consider talking to your doctor about taking Vitamin B12 every few days to maintain your levels or eat foods rich in Vitamin B12 like chicken, fish, and dairy products.
Subdural Hematoma's- blood clots in the brain caused by bruising from severe head trauma. In the older population this can even occur from minor head injuries such as a fall.
Tumors- tumors and cancer in certain parts of the brain can cause dementia. If you are noticing abnormal behaviour from your loved one ensure they are checked out by a physician.
Toxic Chemicals- exposure to heavy metals, mercury, lead, and carbon monoxide can all contribute to dementia.
Heavy drug or alcohol use- this can also lead to dementia as drugs and drinking can lead to damaging of the brain cells.
Understanding more about this condition can help with understanding how to help you or your family.
