Dealing with Grief
Grief is an emotion everyone goes through at some stage in their life. What are some ways you can help work through your grief when it presents itself?
Everyone handles grief differently. Grief can be overwhelming. It can come in the form of anger, disappointment, sadness and other emotions. It can come from losing a job, financial struggles, losing someone you love, or losing your independence or some part of yourself.
Grief is a unique process for each one of us. There is no right or wrong way to handle it. Grief often needs time, space, and the right support in order to heal. Support systems are important in the time of grieving.
I would like to offer you some tips on working with grief and how you can choose different avenues to help you or someone you love work through the process of grief.
1) Seek support from family and friends who understand what you are going through.
2) Consider seeking out professional help through therapists, counsellors, or psychologists who can help provide different coping mechanisms and idea of how to navigate through your grief.
3) Try journaling. Writing down your thoughts, emotions, what triggers you and what makes you feel better.
4) Share memories, good times, and experiences with others if you are grieving someone you lost.
5) Write down something good that happened to you, someone said, or something you did for others on the days you are feeling down.
6) Take care of your physical self- go for a walk, get some sun, eat a well balanced meal, drink 8 glasses or more of water during the day.
7) Try alternative therapies to help work through emotions such as Reiki, Massage, Hypnotherapy, Reflexology.
8) Remember grief doesn’t have an expiry, it can come and go. Recognize your triggers, learn techniques to move through them and give yourself some grace. Everyone progresses at their own pace.
