Fibre

Fibre is often overlooked as an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle…here’s why you need it.

Fibre is a type of carbohydrate that is found in plant based food. Fibre can be soluble (dissolves in water and forms a gel like substance to help lower cholesterol and stabilize blood sugars) or insoluble (adds bulk to the stool to help digestion and prevents constipation)

Fibre is important for our health for the following reasons:

  1. Helps with Weight Management- foods high in fibre are often low in calories and keep you full longer.

  2. Digestion- insoluble fibres adds bulk to stool which helps promote regular bowel movements, prevent constipation and cleanses the intestines.

  3. Controls Blood Sugars- soluble fibre foods help slow the absorption of sugars, which help regulate blood sugar levels.

  4. Gut Support- fibre is a prebiotic. It nourishes the bacteria in our gut to help improve immune health.

  5. Heart Health- soluble fibre helps lower cholesterol and supports overall cardiovascular health.

  6. Disease Prevention- fibre rich diets help reduce the risk of many diseases including: colorectal cancer, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and constipation related issues.

Fibre works better when our bodies are hydrated- that means drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day.

Whole foods such as flax, whole grains (bran, germ) fruits, vegetables, nuts, oats, and legumes (beans, chick peas, lentils) are all good sources of fibre.

Work on gradually increasing your fibre if it is lacking in your diet.
